Carlsbad Caverns National Park

• Established: May 14, 1930

Carlsbad Caverns is an extensive network of underground chambers, including the third largest in North America. Visitors can hike in on their own or take one of two elevators that provide access from the visitor center, above ground. The caverns are known for their large population of Mexican free-tailed bats, which are present from April to November each year. The surrounding area offers opportunities for hiking and birdwatching.
