Great Sand Dunes is home to the largest sand dunes in North America, some as high as 750 ft. They were formed over millions of years by the westerly winds that carry sand deposits from the Rio Grande River and its tributaries to the western base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The park's diverse terrain includes alpine lakes, tundra, grasslands, and six peaks over 13,000 ft. in elevation.
