This 35-star flag employs a medallion-star configuration that consists of a double-wreath with one big star in the center and four flanking stars, one in each corner. The manufacturer of this commercially produced, Civil War-era flag remains unknown, although the same manufacturer appears to have produced Confederate sympathizer flags during the war, as well.
West Virginia was admitted into the Union as the 35th state on June 20, 1863, and the 35-star flag was used during the closing years of the Civil War. Although this was the official star count until July 4th, 1865, most flag makers began adding a 36th star soon after the addition of Nevada on October 31, 1864. This means that, realistically, 35-star flags were produced for less than a year and a half, making flags with this count rare.
