This homemade flag features 13 stars set in what is known as the Trumbull pattern. It is comprised of a box of 12 stars set around the perimeter of the canton, surrounding a single, center star.
It is named after the revolutionary war officer, John Trumbull, who served as George Washington’s aide-de-camp before becoming an accomplished painter of miniature portraits and landscapes, and larger (though often criticized) portraits and historical American scenes. Flags with this configuration appear in several of his depictions of historic events. Since none of these events were sketched or painted in first person, it is uncertain whether the flags in these paintings bear any resemblance to those that were actually present. However, because Trumbull is known for his attention to detail and historical accuracy, some historians have taken these representations to be accurate. Whatever the case may be, this pattern has become permanently associated with his name.
