Managing Joint Finances

Even a positive change such as marriage can bring stress. Finances can become a source of conflict so it’s important that couples discuss their financial goals and expectations early on. A marriage is more likely to work if a couple’s finances are on a firm footing. Talk to a Community Bank associate to set up a joint account for you and your spouse.

Use our Living Expenses Guideline to work out a household budget with your spouse or fiancé and stick to it. Also discuss long-term financial goals and how to achieve them. Designate one person as the bill payer and financial manager. If both of you are sharing this responsibility, be clear about the division of duties. A clear understanding of mutual expectations and responsibilities will reinforce your partnership rather than undermine it.
