There is no embodiment of our nation more iconic than the American flag. Unlike the flags of most countries that have remained fixed over time, the American flag has continued to change as our country has grown. The convention of one star for each state in the union has been followed since the first official flag in 1777. However, not until 1912 was a common set of standards adopted governing the arrangement of the stars and other elements of the flag. In the intervening time, designs varied greatly, leading to the rich variety of historical flags we have today. Each in its own way tells a small part of the story of our country. With this year’s calendar design, we celebrate this story.
