SEPA is the European standard for making electronic transfers between participating European countries. No action is required on your part, other than to be aware and prepared to present your International Bank Account Number (IBAN) and Bank Identifier Code (BIC) when asked by a party to whom you are giving an authorization to debit your account. This information will likely be needed when you initiate a direct debit to automatically pay utility, phone, or insurance bills; such as when setting up an Automatic Bill Payment, or when initiating a One-Time Euro Bill Payment. You will also need this information for single and repeating Online Euro Bill Payments. The provisions of SEPA allow you to now use these services to make payments throughout the Eurozone.
A pre-printed form, "Überweisungsauftrag", accompanies most bills you receive (from Germany only). This form contains the information needed to correctly process your payment and ensure proper credit to the beneficiary. We strongly recommend the use of these pre-printed forms. If you need to pay bills or buy goods while overseas, Local Currency Checks1 allow you to write checks in the country where you're stationed. Transacted only in the banking center, funds are withdrawn from your Checking Account once they've been converted to U.S. Dollars.
