enhanced security icon

Enhanced Security

Community Bank uses industry-standard security protocols that leverage encryption for transferring data. Encryption creates a secure environment for the information being transferred between your browser and Community Bank.

The 4 ways security protocols protect your data:

  • Authentication ensures that you are communicating with the correct server. This prevents another computer from impersonating Community Bank.
  • Encryption scrambles transferred data to prevent eavesdropping of sensitive information and to ensure that only the server you're sending the information to can read it.
  • Data integrity verifies that the information sent by you to Community Bank wasn't altered during the transfer. The system detects if data was added or deleted after you sent the message. If any tampering has occurred, the connection is dropped.
  • One-Time Passcode authentication is used to help verify your identity when you sign in from an unrecognized IP address. The same device may pick up a different IP address each time you log in.

fraud education icon

E-mail and Online Fraud

Phony e-mail messages sent to you for the purpose of stealing personal and financial information, called "phishing and spoofing" are among the most common types of e-mail fraud. Disguised as legitimate e-mail and claiming to be from sources you trust, these messages attempt to entice you to provide various types of personal and confidential information. We will never ask you for personal data such as your SSN, ATM/Debit Card number, or PIN.

recognize email fraud

Recognize e-mail Fraud

Spotting phony e-mail messages is not always easy, and the criminals who use them are becoming more sophisticated about creating them. Phony e-mail messages may ask you to reply directly or click on a link that takes you to a fraudulent website that appears legitimate. In either case, they will generally ask you to provide sensitive personal, financial, or account information.

Tips for spotting phony e-mails

  • Links that appear to be Community Bank or Navy Federal Credit Union links but aren't - If you place your cursor over a link in a suspicious e-mail, your e-mail program likely shows you the destination URL. Do not click the link, but look closely at the URL. A URL that is formatted dodcommunitybank.fakewebsite.com or navyfederalcreditunion.fakewebsite.com, or nfcu.fakewebsite.com is taking you to a location on fakewebsite.com. Just because "communitybank", "navyfederalcredit", or “nfcu” is part of the URL does not guarantee that the site is an official Community Bank or Navy Federal Credit Union site.
  • Urgent Appeals - We will never claim your account may be closed if you fail to confirm, verify, or authenticate your personal information via e-mail.
  • Requests for personal information - Community Bank will never ask you to reply in an e-mail with any personal information such as your SSN, ATM, or PIN.
  • Messages about system and security updates - We will never claim the need to confirm important information via e-mail due to system upgrades.
  • Offers that sound too good to be true - We will never ask you to fill out a customer service survey in exchange for money, then ask you to provide your account number so you can receive the money.
  • Typos and errors - These are often the mark of fraudulent e-mails and websites. Be on the lookout for typos or grammatical errors, awkward writing, and poor visual design.

Protect Against E-mail or Online Fraud

  • Make sure the security features of your computer software, including your web browser, are up-to-date. Software companies continuously provide security updates to their products. Learn more about keeping your computer security current at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/safety/ or visit the National Cyber Security Alliance at http://www.staysafeonline.org.
  • Keep in mind that forging e-mails and creating fraudulent websites is not difficult.
  • Confirm requests for personal or account information, including updates or verifications, by going to the company website directly. Open a new browser window, type the web address and check to see if you must actually perform any activity that an e-mail may be asking you to do, such as change a password.
  • Do not share your usernames or passwords with anyone. Choose passwords that are difficult for others to guess and use a different password for each of your online accounts. Use combinations of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters such as @, %, &, and #. Change your password often.
  • If you think you provided personal or account information in response to a fraudulent e-mail or website, report the fraud immediately, change your passwords, and monitor your account activity frequently.
  • Always sign-off websites or secure areas of websites for which you use a username and password to enter, such as Online Banking.
  • When your computer is not in use, shut it down or disconnect it from the Internet.
  • Be selective about providing your e-mail address to a questionable website. Sharing your e-mail address makes you more likely to receive fraudulent e-mails.
  • Review your monthly credit card and bank account statements thoroughly. Investigate suspicious items immediately to prevent possible fraud before it occurs.
fraud protection icon

Protect Against Online Viruses

In addition to protecting yourself against e-mail and online fraud, be aware of dangerous online viruses that may damage or compromise the security of your computer.

  • Anti-virus protection - If your computer becomes infected with a virus, you might lose information and incur repair expenses. Make sure your computer has an anti-virus protection program installed, preferably one with automatic updates. If you don't have this automatic feature, be sure to update your virus detection program weekly and when you hear of a new virus.
  • Avoid downloads from unknown sources - Downloads from unfamiliar sources may contain hidden programs or viruses that can compromise your computer's security.
  • Attachments - Don't open e-mail attachments unless you are certain that you can trust the source. Learn how to manually screen e-mail attachments if your anti-virus software doesn't automatically screen for viruses.
  • Contact your ISP - Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) may have additional recommendations and technical support for protecting yourself against online viruses, e-mail fraud, and spam. Contact your ISP for recommendations specific to your computer and network.
report fraud icon

Report Fraud

  • If you suspect that someone has gained access to important personal information such as your Community Bank account number or Social Security number, and may use that information for illegal purposes or to withdraw money from your account, immediately call the phone number on your account statement or contact your nearest banking center. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) provides useful information and resources to help you protect yourself against identity theft, including an ID Theft Affidavit for disputing accounts opened in your name without your authorization. Visit the FTC ID Theft Web Site to learn more.
  • If you suspect you might be a victim of identity theft, contact any of the three major credit bureaus to place a fraud alert on your credit file. The alert requests creditors to contact you before opening any new accounts. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the other two credit bureaus will be automatically notified and all three credit reports will be sent to you free of charge.
  • Close other accounts you know or believe have been tampered with or fraudulently opened. Use the ID Theft Affidavit when disputing unauthorized accounts.
  • File a police report. Get a copy of the report to submit a copy of the report to your creditors and others that may require proof of the crime.
  • File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The FTC maintains a database of identity theft cases used by law enforcement agencies for investigations.
  • Report your lost or stolen ATM card or Debit Card immediately by calling 1-800-239-9427 and select Option 6 from the Main Menu and Option 1 from the sub-menu. Your call will be transferred to our Lost and Stolen Department.
